Despite not being new to this flying game, Dave decided that he still needed a challenge to keep up the enthusiasm so he took on the LAA Wings Bronze Award.

Old Sarum Fly-in Planned for the Autumn

A letter received from the organisers:

Dear Mr Palmer,

I am writing on behalf of the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection at Old Sarum Airfield, Salisbury which is planning to host an aircraft fly-in on either Sunday 26th August or 23rd September. I see from your events calendar that this date is potentially free.

The purpose of this email is to ask whether this event would be of interest to your membership. Below is a link to our website from which you will see details about he Collection;

http://www.boscombedownaviationcollection.co.uk/

In support of the fly-in, on-site there will be catering from the airfield restaurant and Dark Revolution Brewery will be providing their usual Saturday late afternoon event with Slinky Fox Pizza. There will also possibly be the attendance of Historic Aero Engines who might – availability yet TBC – will be running their RR Merlin and Bristol Hercules engines.

Within the Collection there will be a number of inside and outside exhibitors and possibly aviation-themed trade stands in addition to that. Entry to the Collection will be free however a charitable donation would be appreciated. We are working with the airfield in the aim that no landing fees will be applied to make this event a great success not just for families who would come along to the Collection but to visiting flyers who wish to partake on the day as well.

I look forward to receiving your reply.

Kind regards

Tim Cornish

At the Royal Aero Club, Piccadilly on May 17th founding Strut member Don Lord was presented with the Cowburn – Kay Old & Bold Trophy,

Established in 1997 and awarded annually to a person aged 65 or over who flies or who has only ceased flying in the previous year, and who has been conspicuously involved in aviation and sport aviation in particular, for their work, initiative, devotion or in other ways.

It came with a certificate, below:

Don followed Major Tim Peake on to the podium to shake Prince Andrew’s hand and from looking at the list of previous winners he is also in excellent company there too.  Don, you are an inspiration!

Down on the Farm #5

This month June 2018:-

Bristell NG5 G-NGAA progress report

Farry came back and did some more wiring. I have fitted the aileron and elevator servos and now I am installing the flaps, elevator and ailerons. The seat belts are in and I have sealed the gap between the canopy glass and the frame. The Kasper propeller and its operator are installed and bled.

Klemm L25C G-ACXE

We have got hold of a crankshaft drive gear to replace the one with the cracks on the teeth faces, I am at the moment attempting to remove it from the crankshaft it came with. The painting /covering has started. We are coating the wood surfaces with polyester resin and then taping over the plywood joints with 2” wide pinked edge tapes.

De Havilland 82C Tiger Moth 5084
